ZEP-RE (PTA Reinsurance Company) is an institution of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) charged with the task of promoting the development of insurance industry in the region.

In addition to transacting reinsurance business, ZEP-RE strives to facilitate the training of professionals within the insurance and reinsurance industries, to provide technical assistance to the insurance industry in the Sub-Region and to promote contacts and business co-operation amongst players in the region. In line with this mandate, ZEP-RE’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Hope Murera hosted the second edition of the ZEP-RE Academy executive series in partnership with the Association of Kenya Insurers. The theme of the event was “The Advance of Analytics in Insurance: An implementation focus”.

The first edition was held in 2017, under the theme ‘Digital Disruption in Insurance: Cutting Through the Noise to Capture Value’. During the former session, reflections were held around how businesses could best position themselves, in order to take advantage of the technological revolution changing the global insurance industry with subsequent regional and local effects.

The CEO of the Association of Kenya Insurers Tom Gichuhi and the IT Manager Brettah Muthuri shared their experiences with regards to the use and application of their Integrated Motor Insurance Database System (IMIDS). IMIDS gives insurers who have subscribed to the system the ability to view historical information on claims as well as the current status of insurance claims and policies. The system further triggers alerts when detecting fraud, particularly around multiple insuring of an individual vehicle.
Stay tuned for the next edition of the ZEP-RE Academy series, as we continue to lead innovation and drive change within the industry.

As we prepare to welcome a brand new year, ZEP-RE (PTA Reinsurance Company) donated to the Ethiopian Children’s Fund (ECF), a primary school for disadvantaged children located in Aleltu, Ethiopia. The school has been operating since 1997 and today helps over 700 children integrating basic education, nutrition, agriculture and health services. ECF also has a TVET center and it further extends support to other students in the country.

With an equal distribution of female and male students, ECF receives over 800 applications per annum, from which it welcomes nearly 80 of the most vulnerable children. At this last year’s National 8th grade examination, ECF had a near 100% success, with only one student with special needs who failed the examination.

ECF’s Country Representative, Mrs. Mahlet Derege indicated that this donation of USD10,000 was timely as the school strives to improve its standards and works with donors and other stakeholders to sustain the needs of the institution.

We are grateful for the ECF team for their continued effort to support underprivileged children to become all they can be, and we hope to hear many success stories.

As part of the 25th Anniversary Celebration, ZEP-RE gave a donation of Ugshs.36,000,000 ($10,000) to Mulago Childrens' Cancer Ward.  The emotional cancer survivors' bell ringing event was part of the donation ceremony.  We are grateful to the oncologist team at Mulago and salute their effort to fight against cancer in children.
